LACES girls volleyball (1-0) won in both junior varsity and varsity in their season-opening match against the Hamilton Yankees (1-4). Varsity won convincingly in the first set, 25-7. The second set was close, as the Unicorns won, 25-21, before cruising to Victory in the third set, 25-15.
The Unicorns displayed their endurance and constant energy throughout the game. The team did a lot to prepare and improve their conditioning. “We did a lot of suicides and exercises to improve our stamina,” said Junior Minji Kim.
Throughout the game, LACES displayed their quality team chemistry even with the absence of many key starters due to graduation and transfer. “We lost a lot of seniors and starting players, but with the team this year, we’re all still very close and are a very well-rounded team,” said Kim. “The hitters this year are very flexible so we don’t have a main outside hitter, but Ruby who originally wanted to be a setter filled in the role and has a great hit.”
As well as varsity, junior varsity won both their sets. In the first set, LACES was down 3-11 however, with the help of sophomore, Mila Sano, and her flurry of aces, the Unicorns were able to finish off the first set. Next week, the Unicorns will play at Fairfax on Monday, and Westchester on Thursday.
