We wrote this article through teary eyes, joyous as we realized that we will be out of this joint in due time. Although this is true, it is also true that LACES will leave us with plenty of fond memories. My colleague and I have attended LACES since the very beginning in 6th grade. Since then, it has been a rollercoaster of emotions at this wonderful institution. Though it may not look like it, they call LACES one of the best public schools in the nation, to which (mostly) we can attest. In a vacuum, it is difficult to compare the quality of the education you are getting to its alternatives, and at times I know that I felt like I wasn’t learning jack and that school was just hard. After a while, I became aware of the benefits of the rigor and accelerated coursework that is exclusive to LACES. In 7th grade, Ms. Kopelevich’s Algebra I was a sisyphean task to which I directed my hatred and wrath. However, years later, I would use nearly everything I learned, and I had not realized that I had every minute detail committed to memory.
As for the food, LACES has seen monumental improvement in six years. For three years in middle school, each day was a new greasy, warm plastic bag containing some iteration of food. No thanks to Michelle Obama. After the pandemic, the food became free, and increasing in quality. As of now, the cafeteria staff gratuitously cooks up delicious meals about three out of five days a week.
Alas the most memorable part of LACES were the people I have met. Outside of my group of friends, there is a friendly face in each class. As students, we suffer together, and the bonds that come from this are strong, connecting students who are strangers over a simple quiz or assignment. Need the answers to the worklog? Cornell notes? I may not know your name but I gotchu fam. This camaraderie is an asset, as having peers you connect well with is helpful especially in an environment of rigor, as we help each other stay afloat.
Lastly, I must commend the faculty at LACES. The custodial staff and school resource officers are infinitely kind and helpful. The administrative staff aren’t scary. Teachers are helpful, understanding, and patient. Well, most of them. These people have contributed greatly to my successes and failures, and for this I must thank them.
Dear readers, thank you for supporting Deliciousity, we would not be writing these jawns without you.
Best,
Roan and Atticus
