I was going to do it, but that new movie came out
I had planned to see it months before this came up
It’s not like I don’t have time, it’s due in a few months
I’ll get started in a week or two
I was going to do it, but I just bought that new game
The ratings are incredible, it’s gonna be great
I still have a little under two months
I’ll get started in a week or two
I was going to do it, but I visited my girlfriend
It had been a while since I took her out on a date
I still have a little over a month
I’ll get started in a week
I was going to do it, but I just wasn’t feeling it today
Nothing to talk about, just don’t wanna
I still have a month, maybe a little less
I’ll get started tomorrow
Finally, I started it
Took me a while to get started, but I did
I do have a little less than a month
Maybe it’s time for a break
I was going to do it, but I had to visit the doctor
I’ve had a bad cough as of late
I have 2 weeks
I’ll finish it tomorrow
I was going to do it, but …
… Why didn’t I do it?
I have tomorrow
I’ll finish it today
I was going to do it
Really, I was truly going to do it
Please don’t be mad! I’ll … I’ll …
I’ll finish it yesterday …
One of the most prominent and versatile examples of literature is poetry, and it’s a lot more common in daily life than you think. If you listen to music on even a semi-consistent basis, you have officially crowned yourself as a lover of poetry. Lyrical poems and music go hand in hand. Despite this, poetry doesn’t get enough recognition in daily life. Personally, I believe poetry is amazing in every sense of the word. It manages to be an incredibly effective pastime that encourages you to embrace your creative side, while being so flexible that anyone can do it. The only limit is your imagination!
The world of poetry is as vast as the real world, with enough comedic highs and sadistic lows around for anybody to pick up a pen and begin writing. If you have a set style, there’s a type of poem just for you! For music lovers, you could create a poem that rivals your favorite musical artist with a lyric poem. If you can create an instrumental that fits, you can even make your own song with that poem! People who want to talk about a specific subject can write an ode. For example, an ode to your adorably mean tabby cat. There are shorter poem types for people who believe less is more, like haikus, which are poems that only have 17 syllables. There is even free-form poetry for people who don’t want to follow a set structure. You can write whatever you like, however you’d like to write it. Poetry is so flexible and so easy to tailor to a style or taste that it’s built for anybody to give it a try.
I wasn’t kidding about your imagination being the only limit. You can write a poem about anything, no matter the subject. You could write a haiku about the sun disappearing over the horizon to welcome the coming winter. You could make an abecedarian poem (a poem where each line or stanza begins with a letter in the alphabet in order) about 26 things that upset you. Or perhaps a free-form about the tragic final moments of a person who is succumbing to their wounds, and looking back on their life. Maybe a sonnet (a poem with 17 lines and a strict rhyme scheme) of how the chains of dependence tear down young minds. Even a Dracula-esque villanelle (a poem known for its ABA rhyme structure and repeated lines) talking about how the world will be yours to rule. The possibilities are just as potentially heartwarming and happy as they are tragic and frightening.
Poetry can connect you to people in your life. In my personal experience, poetry has allowed me to vent my frustrations and share my passion for writing with other people. I ended up sharing my work with friends and family, creating a stronger bond with my cousin, who is now my best friend. I found a community of people who share common interests with me, and we connect through our sometimes funny, sometimes tragic poetry. I implore you to try to write a poem of your own, even if you end up not sharing it with anybody. It’s a true light in my life and allows me to express things that I wouldn’t be able to with words. I truly believe that if you gave it a shot, you would find poetry to be amazing.
