It’s that time of the year again. The leaves are falling, the temperature is dropping, and you just saw an ad for a new pumpkin spiced drink. Fall is back for its long-overdue reunion with us, and while everyone else seems pretty happy to see it coming, I’m not so glad. I’m not going to pretend I hate the fall or anything silly like that, it does have Thanksgiving, Halloween, and the rain we all need in this desert. Still, I have to admit that fall is my least favorite season of the year. I believe it’s simply outclassed by the other seasons and falls short in areas the others exceed in.
I am a summer baby; my birthday is June 11th. As a result, I am automatically biased toward summer. Out of all of the seasons, summer also takes the crown for the longest break from school, which is a beautiful plus. Also, although I’m in the minority, I truly do enjoy the heat. I’ve spent a lot of time in Arizona and Belize, and compared to those ovens, the heat here is quite tame. Plus, summer is the perfect time to go to the beach with friends and family! One of my favorite things to do in summer is challenge rough waves with my family and dunk my cousins in the water. Summer is always going to be my favorite, and by extension is superior to fall in my opinion.
Even spring is superior to fall. After the gloomy coldness of winter, the restoration of the leaves in spring is amazing. I think spring looks so much more alive than fall, which always puts a boost on my mental health. In addition to that, the sun comes out during spring, which brings a good warmth that’s not quite as intense summer heat. I enjoy being outside during the spring the most, and spring is usually the time of the year where I get to hang out with my family who lives out-of-state. When you see spring like I do, fall takes a back seat.
In my opinion, winter is the superior fall. It has the better holiday, the better snacks, the longer break; it’s just better. If I have to be shivering in my house I’d rather do it in winter. Hot chocolate and hot cider are in season, s0 it’s not like I don’t have drinks to warm me up. The only part of fall I enjoy more than winter is Halloween, and I don’t prefer it over Christmas to where it outweighs everything else winter has. Even if I don’t love the gloomy winter as much as summer or spring, I still prefer winter over fall.
In comparison to the other seasons above, I’m unfortunately going to have to put fall in last place. A main reason I don’t enjoy fall as much as the other seasons is it makes having to wake up early so much worse. That first morning when fall temperatures kick in and the cold air hits you at 6 a.m. when you have to get up for school is one of the top five worst experiences of all time. It also puts a personal stunt on me because I hate the feeling of going on a run during cold weather. As someone who loves cardio, fall, especially after I’ve gotten into the groove during summer, hits me like a truck.
Despite this entire article sounding like I’m trying to find a reason not to like fall, I truly do like it a lot. Fall has a lot of things I love, like Halloween and spooky movie nights. It’s my favorite time of the year to get together with my family and watch comedies, play card games and light campfires. Still, as much as I hate to bash on it, in comparison to my beloved summer, spring, and winter, fall is my least favorite season of the year.
